Jane Wandering takes travel SERIOUSLY! Both because we LOVE to travel, but also because we know traveling can be dangerous. We feel it is one of the most educational experiences you can have. This education can come at a high cost though if you aren’t properly prepared.
Below you can find 6 travel safety tips you might not have though of. These tips can save headaches that occur when you are robed, lost, or in some serious overseas trouble! Take a look below and let us know of any other helpful tips by commenting below!
- Make Electronic Copies of Your Documents
Paper copies are a great idea, but electronic copies can’t be stolen. Thankfully no one at Jane Wandering has had their passport stolen while traveling abroad. However, we did find a post by someone who has. Check that out HERE.
To avoid this and protect your most important travel document, scan and print your passport out, as well as save the scans on your laptop or phone. It is vitally important that you do not lose this document!
If you are looking for a travel inspired passport cover, check THESE out. Hand sewn and made with natural leather, these Jane Wandering Passport Covers are the perfect way to keep your travel documents safe.

- Don’t Carry Everything Together:
Simple enough, separate your valuables. If you carry your cash, phone, camera, and other special items in one purse or book bag then you will be *up a creek* if this bag is stolen! Separating your items and, of course, NEVER carry your passport around town while you are traveling. Lock the passport in a safe either in your hotel room or behind the counter at a trusted hotel.
You can also purchase bands that strap to your body underneath your clothing that can hold your passport in a hidden and secure location. You can find one of these bands HERE. There are multiple styles, so when you get a moment do a quick Google search.
- Travel like a Local:
Strutting down the streets of New York in stilettos and a mini skirt is fine. Strutting down the streets of a foreign city, maybe not the best idea.
Your first thought should be safety and if you are attracting too much attention, you may become a target. We aren’t suggesting you wear baggy clothing and act like you just rolled out of bed. Instead, do your research and see how people dress wherever you are going. If shorts and a t-shirt are common, then pack that type of clothing. Be aware of the social norms and abide by them if you are comfortable.
- Avoid Oversharing Online:
Posting photos or checking in on social media sites advertises your absence from home. That can make theft at home a possibility.
However, live tweeting and constantly posting on Instagram or Facebook that you are in a foreign place can make you a target wherever you are. If you tag the location on you photos you can make it much easier for attackers to find you. You do not want to make yourself a target.
Real-time updates can be tempting, but wait until you return safely home before sharing your adventures.
- E-Mail Someone A Copy Of Your Itinerary:
Your parents, friends, significant other, anyone! Make sure someone back home knows where you will be and when you will arrive. If you have cellular service and the ability to contact your loved ones, casual check-ins are a great way to let people back home know you are safe and where you should be.
When it comes to safety, Jane Wandering doesn’t think there is anything wrong with oversharing with your loved ones! 🙂
- Enroll in STEP:
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
**Pretty smart, huh?**
This amazing tool will allow the U.S. Embassy to contact you in case of emergencies and help assist your loved ones in contacting you in case anything may happen. Safety conditions concerning your travel destination would also be made easily accessible through this program. You can learn more and signup for this program HERE!
